Cathay Pacific cuts 8,500 jobs, shutters regional airline

Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways（香港国泰航空公司） said Wednesday it would cut 8,500 jobs（削减/裁掉8500个工作岗位） and shut（关闭） a regional airline（地方/区域航空公司） as it grapples with（挣扎） the plunge（骤降） in air travel（航空出行） due to the pandemic（大流行疾病；这里只新冠疫情）.

About 5,300 employees based in Hong Kong and another 600 elsewhere will likely（可能） lose their jobs（失业）, and 2,600 unfilled positions（空缺的职位） will be cut. The cuts are about 24% of the company’s workforce（劳动力）, Cathay Pacific said in a statement.

The company will also shut down（关闭） Cathay Dragon（港龙航空）, its regional airline unit, with operations ceasing（终止） from Wednesday. It will seek regulatory approval（政策批注） for most of the routes（线路） to be operated by Cathay Pacific and its budget（廉价的/平价的） airlines subsidiary（附属公司/子公司） HK Express（香港快运）.

The restructuring（重组） is aimed at reducing Cathay Pacific’s cash burn（资金消耗） to 500 million Hong Kong dollars ($64.5million) a month, from about 1.5 billion Hong Kong dollars ($193.5 million) to 2 billion Hong Kong ($258 million) dollars currently, Cathay Pacific CEO Augustus Tang said in a statement.

“The global pandemic continues to havea devastating impact on（对......产生毁灭性的） aviation（民航） and the hard truth（残酷的事实是） is we must fundamentally（彻底地） restructure（重组） the Group to survive（存活下来）,” Tang said.

“We have to do this to protect as many jobs as possible, and meet our responsibilities（职责） to the Hong Kong aviation hub（民航枢纽） and our customers.”

The restructuring plan（重组计划） will cost about 2.2 billion Hong Kong dollars ($283.8 million), the company said.

Executive pay cuts（高管降薪） will also continue throughout 2021 and there will be no pay increments（涨薪） for 2021 nor bonuses（奖金） for this year for all Hong Kong employees, Cathay Pacific said. Ground staff（地勤人员） will also be offered a voluntary（自愿的） leave plan（休假计划） in the first half of next year.

In June, Cathay Pacific raised（筹集） 39 billion Hong Kong dollars ($5 billion)in a recapitalization plan（资金重组计划） that gave the city’s government a stake（股份） of about 6% in the airline.
